Q. What can happen if an application fails? A. When a device, connection or application fails, it can take down mission critical operations. Sometimes, one systems failure will cascade to applications on other systems that rely on the data or services from the failed unit. How exhaust air is returned to the cooling units within the data center is as important a consideration as the distribution of cool air to the servers. Hot aisle and cold aisle techniques must be extended to include evaluation of airflow dynamics. At higher power densities the amount of space required to house cooling equipment will overtake the number of cabinets. Alternate approaches, or a reduction in the amount of equipment housed in each cabinet, must be considered. Not only is it necessary to store key data for longer periods, but being able to retrieve information at a granular level –right down to specific emails –is now an IT responsibility, one that if not handled properly could result in a vacation with the local municipal system. Virtual machines offer many benefits: server consolidation, increased utilization and faster recovery times after failure. While virtualization faded from the limelight for a while, it is now one of the hottest trends in the industry again, as organizations aim to increase the utilization, flexibility and cost-effectiveness in a distributed computing environment. VMWare, Citrix, Microsoft, IBM, RedHat and many other vendors offer virtualization solutions. If users are to embrace client backup, the backup process must be transparent. Users must be able to continue to work with little or no interruption. There must be protection while the computer is disconnected from the network, and there must be automatic storage management synchronisation when the computer is reconnected to the network. New or changed data should be replicated immediately to the disk drive whenever a file is saved or closed. Selected data is redundantly stored on disk drives in the first group of disk drives andthe second group of disk drives, such that, upon failure of the first arbiter, the selected data is available to the first storage processor and the second storage processor through the second arbiter. Nexus sets the stage for converged Fibre Channel and Ethernet networks. The Nexus products will allow companies to consolidate their separate server and storage networking infrastructures onto one unified network fabric. |
